Amazing Scenery:
* Scenic travel and tourism are not publicized as much today as they were in past years. Perhaps, this is because so much of the original scenery is gone and artificial attractions must take up the slack. Not so in our back-to-nature region. The main attraction is nature herself. You will see amazing wilderness vistas, inspiring seascapes and uninhabited islands you can reach without a boat. Also the many horse farms and dairy farms that dot the countryside. Houseboating for a weekend (or more) for a week on the Suwannee can be a unique never-to-be-forgotten experience.
Boating:
* If your idea of great boating does not having to watch every second for another boat, this is your king of places with your kind of waters. Boat the Suwannee River, the Steinhatchee, and the Waccasassa and see what can only be described as the "Real Florida" - accept no imitations. Boat docks can be located at nearby Manatee Springs and Fanning Springs.
Hunting and Fishing:
* Sportsmen rate the region as a virtual paradise. The region abounds in wildlife management areas are open to seasonal hunting. Fishing is superb both in the fresh waters and the mighty Gulf.
Birding:
* Birders visit the area from every state in the U.S. and many foreign countries because over 250 species may be seen here (especially in the refuges) including several uncommon types such as wood storks, tri-colored herons, five species of rails, seven different terns and 35 kinds of warblers. Plus: Wild life turkey, eagles, osprey and plain old red-winged blackbirds. Located near Chiefland is the Lower Suwannee Refuge, Wildlife Refuge and Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge.
Canoeing and Kayaking:
* You can even find rapids and white water on some of our rivers but mostly they're mild, flowing and simply gorgeous. Bring your own craft or rent one at such points as Suwannee or Manatee Springs. Explore Suwannee tributaries. Try the Waccasassa where the famous Wild Hog Canoe Race is held each April. Other springs available are Ginnnie Springs, Poe Springs, Devils Den, Blue Grotto and Hart Springs.
River Boat Casino:
* For those who like the casino, there is one located just south of Chiefland.
Local Attractions:
Auto exploring and day tripping are activities to add interest and adventure to your travels and/or vacation. Choose a base in Chiefland and tour in almost any direction and you will find places, events and scenes you'll never forget. Consult our map plus a good Florida map. Trails, hiking and bicycle routes are everywhere throughout the region. A new rails-to-trails project will provide rural hiking or bicycling all the way from Cross City to Chiefland. More great trails for off-road pedaling are in the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, both the Dixie and Levy County Units. Many lightly used country roads are suitable for scenic bicycling and several bike groups use the routes often.* 6 mile(s) from Dakota Vineyards and Winery-Chiefland * 6 mile(s) from Manetee Springs State Park * 8 mile(s) from Andrews Wildlife Area * 9 mile(s) from Fanning Springs Park * 9 mile(s) from The Chiefland Astronomy Village * 12 mile(s) from Lower Suwannee Wildlife Refuge * 12 mile(s) from Hart Springs * 14 mile(s) from Bronson Motor Speedway * 25 mile(s) from Blue Grotto * 26 mile(s) from Gulf of Mexico * 33 mile(s) from Poe Springs * 34 mile(s) from Cedar Key Beach * 35 mile(s) from University of Florida * 35 mile(s) from Horseshoe Beach * 43 mile(s) from Kanapaha Botanical Gardens-Gainsville * 45 mile(s) from Crystal River, home of the Manatees * 47 mile(s) from Homosassa State Wildlife Park * 50 mile(s) from Horse/trail riding in Ocala * 55 mile(s) from Silver Springs Theme Park * 60 mile(s) from Weeki Wachee Theme Park
Restaurants:
* Adjacent to Greek/Italian restaurant, Although this unspoiled region of the lower Big Bend is both pristine and, in some ways, primitive, there is no lack of superior restaurants, especially ones specializing in local seafood. Sample the cuisine at and around such spots as Steinhatachee, Suwannee, Fanning Springs, Cedar Key and Yankeetown, to name a few.
