The Royal was built in 1837 as one of the first purpose built Hotels in England and was visited by some great people like Charles Dickens who started his world book tour by writing his biography in the Hotel, and Royalty, who used to travel up the river Wye by boat. Directions

Upon reaching the end of the M50, follow the main road towards Monmouth. At the Wilton [3rd] roundabout turn left towards Ross-on-Wye follow the road until you come to a right fork up the cliffs, this will take you right to the Royal Hotel's front door.

The Royal Hotel itself is only a few steps away from the market square and was visited by Charles Dickens in 1867. Ross-On-Wye is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with the River Wye meandering southwards through the spectacular Wye valley. Clearwell Castle, built in 1727, is considered to be Englands premiere Neo-Gothic mansion. Though it was completely destroyed by fire in 1929, it has been fully renovated and is open to the public from Easter until October.
