Sites of Historical Interest:
* Certosa of San Giacomo: medieval monastery which traces Arab culture; of particular interest is the small Closter and the Church. It includes the Certosa Museum and the town hall library Solaro, is the second center of the island, largely composed of white houses. PIAZZA UMBERTO (PIAZZETTA) This small square, known here simply as the "Piazzetta" is always bustling and crowded and is the heart of Capri. MARINA GRANDE This is the most frequently used port on the island, and is also a noted beach and swimming spot. The town extending along the little port is set at the center of a broad inlet overlooking the Gulf of Naples, at the western edge of which extends the beach, while just a bit further along you can see the ruins of the so-called "Palazzo a Mare" probably Augustus's favorite residence on the island, stripped during excavations done at the end of the 18th century. MARINA PICCOLA Beach resort, as well as the island's southern landing point. The port of Marina Piccola is a point of departure for interesting excursions to the Grotta Verde, the Faraglioni and the other marine grottoes of the southern side of the island. FARAGLIONI The first of these three rocks (elev. 109 meters.) is known as the "Stella" and is joined to the coast, the second one is the lowest of the three (elev. 81 meters.) while the third (elev. 104 mt.) known as the "Scapolo" is inhabited by a rare type of light blue lizard. GROTTA AZZURRA The ancients already knew the famous grotto as we can see from the ruins of Roman structures but the true discovery came during the 19th century. The aperture is about 2 meters across and just over a meter high; the interior can be reached with special boats (the depth of the sea ranges from 14 to 22 meters). GARDENS OF AUGUSTUS A public garden overlooks the sea, with scenic terraces offering panoramic views of Capri, the Faraglioni and the Marina Piccola. * Church of San Costanzo: founded in the year 1000 and enlarged in 1300, which contains the relics of the Saint Constantine patron saint of Capri. The interior is basilican but in it you can recognize the original Greek-cross plan, inscribed in a square with recycled columns, supporting the dome and the vaults of the side-aisles. * Church of San Michele: renown for its majolica floor, its paintings, the marble high altar and the wooden side altars of the XVIII century * Church of Santa Sofia: founded in 1510, of interest are the domes and the late baroque facade * Villa San Michele: built by Axel Munthe, Swedish physician and writer on the ruins of an ancient Roman villa, now a museum with a wonderful garden * Villa Jovis: the most important of Tiberius villas in its original plan * Tour around the island: every morning, except winter, with departure at 9:00 a.m. the ride lasts about 2 hours * Grotta Azzurra: motorboat from Marina Grande; you may enter the grotto in a rowboat, for a fee, from 9:00 to one hour before sunset * Monte Solaro: the highest point of the island where you can enjoy an unforgettable panorama * Belverdere Migliera: wonderful walk towards an enchanting panorama * Castiglione and Belvedere Cannone: from the "Piazzetta" along Via Madre Serafina you will reach the Belvedere Cannone from which you can survey the eastern part of the island, with the Faraglioni and the inlet of Marina Piccola, just before the Belvedere a stairway leads up to the medieval castle of the Castiglione, completely renovated * Capri: capital of the island, the town is formed of little houses in tufa and limestone, covered with terraces, elegant boutiques fill the lanes that surround the central "Piazzetta" * Anacapri: set on the slopes of Monte Solaro, is the second center of the island, largely composed of white houses * Piazza Umberto - Piazzetta: this small square, known here simply as the "Piazzetta" is always bustling and crowded and is the heart of Capri * Marina Grande: This is the most frequently used port on the island, and is also a noted beach and swimming spot.
