Palace Hotel Relais Falisco
Via don Minzoni 19
Civita Castellana, IT
Rating: 4 Stars
Relais Falisco is in the heart of town of Civita Castellana (35 km far form Viterbo). The history of this town is both fascinating and tormented. It rises from the ruins of antique Falerii, the political and cultural centre of the Falisci people. Faithful allies of the Etruscan Poleis, in the III century BC, Falerii was attacked and conquered by the Romans that obliged the inhabitants to leave and to build Falerii Novi. After almost 1500 years the Falisci people repossessed the ancient city, leaving us the pleasure of admiring the archaeological site of Falerii Novi, visible only in part. The groups of buildings, which make up the Hotel, encircle a charming internal courtyard a characteristic piazzetta visible from the restaurant and nearly all of the bedrooms. Thanks to a careful restoration, this antique mansion has regained its past splendor, providing visitors with authentic examples of a variety of architectural styles dating from the 1600*s to the present day. At the Relais Falisco, everything has been studied with a meticulous eye for detail so as to create an elegant and relaxing atmosphere. The romantic hall with fireplace and the panoramic terrace are ideal settings where to enjoy moments of leisure. Be it chatting amongst friends, reading an absorbing novel or savoring a fine glass of wine. The 8 suites, the Jacuzzi within an Etruscan cave, and the watchtower with its wonderful views, add extra appeal to the Hotel. Celebrities who have slept in the Hotel include King Vittorio Emanuele II and Gabriele d* Annunzio.

Civita Castellana: In this place long ago, Falerii was born, the ancient capital of the Falisci, that was fortified by the surrounding nature with high and rugged rocks. After many military events, defeats, armistices, treaties, and alliances during the IV century and the year 241 B.C. due to the umpteenth revolt, the Romans conquered, looted and then forced the inhabitants to build a new center on the plain, thus, Falerii. The tufaceous spur bordered by the waters of the Tio Maggiore - Purgatorio in the north, the Rio Filetto in the south and Treia in the west was reinforced by a large wall in the east where today we can still see the majestic Sangallo Fort. It is one of the most famous examples of military architecture of the Renaissance period that exploited the Falisco preparation for defence. The urban center did not only cover the prominent political role of the region but also the religious role. Besides the examples of religious terra cotta ex-voto there are remains of Etruscan architecture - Falisca decorations in slabs and polychrome high -reliefs. There are the ruins of the temple of Scasato, the end of IV-III cent. B.C., also known as Apollo because of a clay bust of the god that was discovered there, close to the heroic portrait of Alexander the Great by Lisippo and an expressive head of Zeus. In the adjacent rise of Vignale there are another two places of worship, known as the temples Minor and Major the end of the VI-III cent. B.C., where antefixes were found in the heads of Slleno, Menadi, Giunone Sospita and the statues of the face of Mercury. Below, along the Rio Purgatorio route, we find the santuaries of the Sassi Caduti V-I century B.C., dedicated to Mercury with a polychrome acroterium with two fighting warriors of the Cappuccini and of Celle VI B.C.-II cent. A.D., had fairly modest chamber tombs that were arranged with simple benches in niches dug out in the walls. The necropoli are outstretched onto rocks near Penna, Valsiarosa, Ferrano, Colonette, Cappuccini, Montarano and Celle. On the inside there are rich objects where the wealthy production of Falisca ceramics were introduced from IV-III cent. B.C., that in a certain sense is still alive today and for many modern factories, the pivot of Civita Castellana*s economy. In the previously mentioned Sangallo Fort there is the Falisco Agro Museum with numerous exhibits of the history and culture of this population that dates from X-I century B.C. Other archeological artefacts include the splendid architectural decorations of temples and can be seen in the Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome. Santa Maria Maggiore Cathedral and other Churches. Main events: Masked parades in Carnevale in February Mardi Gras Civita Festival in July Ceremonies to celebrate the patron saints of the city, St. Marciano and St. John in September Historical towns of Middle Ages Period in the neighborhoods: Viterbo.....32 km The historical events which have characterized the Province of Viterbo have left precious witnesses in form of churches, palaces, castles, and ruins. The historical center of the town surrounded by its medieval towered townwalls of the 11th 13th centuries contains a remarkable architectural patrimony. To see: the Pope Palace, San Pellegrino Quarter, and Thermal Springs. Orvieto with its Magnificent Cathedral, and the Well of St. Patrizio was built according to Sangallo*s drawings and since the very first years of its construction it attracted great interest for the ingenious idea of its two parallel and non-communicating spiral staircases. Civita di Bagnoregio *the dying City* is a true treasure worth to be visited. Caprarola with Palazzo Farnese Bagnaia with Villa Lante and its Gardens Bomarzo with the Park of Monsters Rome.....45 km, with all its treasures.
