The Atapuerca Research team discovered in Sima del Elefante of a jawbone belonging to a hominid who lived in and around these hills 1.2 million years ago, making it the oldest hominid specimen in Europe. The fossil was unearthed during the 2007 dig, and has become a new palaeontological milestone which will provide us with much more information about our ancestors. The jawbone was officially presented on the works site of the Museum of Human Evolution, where it will be eventually housed along with the many other important remains found in Sierra de Atapuerca.
