Area Attractions

Mahon
In Mahon you can visit the Menorca's Museum, hosted in the old Franciscan convent, Santa Maria's Church, with its magnificent organ, whose quality attracts famous musicians from all over the world. Another suggestion is to stroll in the port's area, where you can find a lot of restaurants and bars and where people use to go out, especially in summer.
Ciudadela
The old island's capital, Ciudadela, is only a 15 minute drive away from the Hotel. It is still possible to admire parts of the ancient city walls, and the city offers many interesting palaces and monuments to visit, such as Santa Maria's Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace and the Seminary. All the old part of the city is closed to traffic and full of shops. In the harbour tourists can find many open air restaurants.
Lago Calaon Bosch
Calaon Bosch's marina is known as "El Lago". There you can find various plaisure or fishing boats, even some professional fishing boat for lobsters. Yachts with mast cannot enter the marina, due to the presence of a bridge at the entrance. It is a very lively area, where you can finds tourists as well as locals, and it is teemed with restaurant and bars.
Casco Antiguo Ciudadela
Of the old city walls, only two bastions are still visible, the Es Born bastion, on top of which the Town Hall was constructed, and the Sa Font bastion, where in the past a stream used to flow into the bay. Actually the walls have been substituted by the three most important avenues, known collectively as Sa Contramurada. One of the most characteristic streets is Ses Voltes, a narrow roadway flanked by houses with vaulted arcades. Even if the ground floors of these buildings are now occupied by shops, the street has not lost its charm and its characteristic medieval atmosphere.
Puerto de Ciudadela
Compared to the Mahon's harbour, the port of Ciudadela almost resembles a Venetian canal, complete with a bridge. Possibly it is such a charming place precisely for its small dimensions: it is a kilometre long and two hundred metres wide, on average. The lively atmosphere of the harbour contrasts with the severity of the ancient walls. It teems with cheerful open air bars, crowded restaurants, visitors and stalls. Fishing boats and yachts complete the little port's colourful environment.
Casco Antiguo y Puerto de Mahon
Clustered high on the cliff, the old part of the city overlooks the harbour. The best views are those enjoyed by the stately homes of Isabel II street, at the end of which there is the St. Francesc convent, the first convent built in Mahon (1719). Its cloister hosts the archaeological treasures of the Museu de Menorca. In Santa Maria's Church there is one of the cityos treasures: the magnificent organ of 3210 pipes and 4 keyboards. Behind this church, whose construction was ordered by the king Alfonso III, stands a statue of the latter, in the center of the Plaza de la Conquesta. In the same square there are also the Can Mercadal palace, which actually hosts the public library, and the access to the viewpoint overlooking the Costa de Ses Voltes. This access is a stairway flanked by gardens which leads down to the port, and is one of the key images first perceived by visitors arriving by boat. At the end of this passageway visitors enter the area of the port known as Baixamar, which in recent years has become the nightlife centre, with design bars and restaurants. Traces of the commercial activity that used to be the main function of the harbour can still be traced in the remaining old buildings. Today the main characteristic of this place is the Club Maritim, with modern yachts moored in front of it.
Monumentos Megaliticos
Prehistoric monuments can be found all around the island, but within an area of approximately 15 kms. araound the Hotel tourists can find the most important three: the archaeological site of Son Catlar, with its "taula", "talayots" and impressing surrounding walls; the Naveta de Es Turdons, the most famous of the existing burial chambers of this type, which dates back to 1400 B.C. The name naveta (little boat) derives from its form, resembling that of an inverted hull.
Playas Virgenes
The natural bay formed by Son Xoriguer beach is flanked, on one side by the holiday resort of the same name and, on the other, by an unspoilt landscape. Son Saura is the widest sand beach among those classified as "Costa Sur de Ciudadela" (Ciudalela's south coast), located in the new area of the Natural Park. Together with Es Talaier, Turqueta and Macarella, it forms a group of "virgin beaches" which, fotunately, have remained untouched by urban development. Es Talaier is a delightful resort we can admire coming from Son Saura behind Punta des Governador. As the other beaches above mentioned, its sand is white due to the decomposition of the limestone soil. Cala en Turqueta and Macarella-Macarelleta are the most admired beaches by those who know these places. Accede to them by road is rather complicated, but for boats they provide safe anchorage in idyllic settings.
