Area Attractions

Parque del Buen Retiro
A stroll through Madrid's most famous park, located right behind the Prado museum, is the perfect way of concluding (or beginning) any day in Madrid. This large park was originally built in the 15th century for being the gardens of Philip IV's Buen Retiro Palace. Later on, at the end of the 19th century it was opened to public. It counts some 15000 trees and includes, among other things, a working observatory and three exhibition halls, one of which is the "Palacio de Cristal", a building entirely made of glass facing a lake.
Museo Nacional Reina Sofia
Formerly the San Carlos hospital, this building was remodeled in 1981 and in 1986 it was inaugurated as the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, becoming the main location in Madrid for national and international exhibitions. It hosts all types of art-related activities, such as conferences, courses, poetry readings or contemporary music concerts. In 1990 the collection of modern Spanish art was moved there from the Spanish museum of contemporary art (MEAC), which today is the Anthropology Museum.
Torre Espana
In a slightly less central area of Madrid there is a tall tower called Torre Espana. It is built in an interesting style, but it has no tourist appeal and it cannot be entered. It is surrounded by a nice park with benches and large lawns called Quinta Fuente del Berro.
El Museo del Prado
The Prado Museum is renown as being one of the largest art galleries in the world. It also exhibits sculptures, drawings, coins and other works of arts, but it is undoubtedly its large collection of paintings which has granted it its worldwide fame. It houses more than 8,600 paintings, of which less than 2,000 are shown to public because of lack of space. Many museums throughout the world have less artistic riches in their halls than the Prado Museum has in storage.
