Things to Do in Boca Raton, Florida
The activities and attractions in Boca Raton reflect the eclectic mix of interests in the
area. Whether one is looking for high culture in the theatre or museums, something for the
kids, or various sporting events, both residents and tourists will have plenty of ways to
fill their days and nights.
Florida Symphonic Pops of Boca Raton
Boca Raton has worked hard to foster its cultural atmosphere, especially in the areas of
music and drama. One way to witness this atmosphere is to take in an evening
with the Florida Symphonic Pops of Boca Raton. Playing tunes from the 1930's and 1940's,
this acclaimed orchestra has been entertaining audiences for over forty years. If one's
tastes are a bit more classically oriented, then visit the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra.
This organization plays in various locations and frequently highlights international
guest-performers. Boca Raton also provides plenty of dramatic theatre. For example,
visitors can attend the Caldwell Theatre Company, in its 19th season, the Jan McArt's
Royal Palm Dinner Theatre, a theatre-in-the- round, or the Little Palm Theatre,
specializing in children's productions.
Boca Raton's International Museum of Cartoon Art
Boca Raton fosters this cultural atmosphere further through its various
museums. One museum in particular, the International Museum of Cartoon Art, is so unique
that it is the only one of its kind in the world. Some fifty countries are represented in
the over 160,000 drawings and 10,000 books on display at this attraction. Open since March
of 1996, this museum is in its infancy stage. Planned for the future are an in-house
accredited cartooning school and resident cartoonists to answer visitors' questions. A
more traditional museum in the city is the Boca Raton Museum of Art, open to guests for
nearly forty years. The Museum of Art also represents the single largest cultural
organization in Boca Raton.
Though the city has emphasized culture and sophistication in its attractions,
there's still plenty to do with the entire family in Boca Raton. The Boca Raton Children's
Museum teaches children local history and folklore through exhibits inside a 1912
Cracker-style, wooden house.
Boomer's Family Recreation Center in Boca Raton
Two of the more popular exhibits in the museum, an mini-market and a pretend bank,
demonstrate to children our economic system. Finally, the annual festival Kidfest, held in
the spring, combines puppet shows and historical demonstrations to further educate and
entertain its young visitors. Other family attractions in Boca Raton include Boomer's
Family Recreation Center, an Australian-theme fun park, and the Buehler Planetarium, which
offers various laser-light shows and educational programs.
Boca Raton Outdoor Activities
For the sports enthusiast, Boca Raton offers some of the finest participant and spectator
venues in all of Florida. In the city, there are over 27 local parks and 2.5 miles of
public beaches. Most of these parks have amenities such as picnic areas, pavilions,
grills, and boat docks. Some of the most noteworthy of these city parks are Memorial Park,
Patch Reef Park, Spanish River Park, and Red Reef Park, with a nearby reef that is a
particular favorite with snorkelers. Boca Raton also has fantastic spectator-sport
possibilities. Locally, professional baseball is a draw with the Florida Marlins, playing
at Joe Robbie Stadium. For both pro-football and pro-basketball, nearby Miami provides the
top-rated teams of the Dolphins and the Heat. Furthermore, local Jai-Alai and Polo matches
continuously draw large crowds of both residents and tourists.
