
Things to Do in Tallahassee
Tallahassee is not your regular tourist city. It is filled with educational sights,
historical sights and beautiful rolling hills and forests. History abounds in the museums,
parks, roadways and archeological sites.
Florida State Seminole Athletics
Basketball, baseball, tennis, ice hockey and track are great spectator
sports at FSU and FAMU. A popular biking route is located at the Tallahassee-St. Marks
Historic State Trail. The trail is also open to joggers, hikers and horse back riders.
Rent your in-line skates or bicycles at St. Marks Trail Bikes and Blades.
FSU Seminole Reservation on Lake Bradford have canoe and boat rentals. Several Guide
services in the area provide pontoon cruises. The Outdoor Shop is a provider of outdoor
paraphernalia. They have just about anything one needs for camping, hiking, fishing,
backpacking or any other outside activity.
Shopping in Tallahassee
Shopping in the capital city is an intriguing experience. Bradley's Country Store
sells sausage, grits, hogshead cheese and liver pudding. The store is on the National
Register of Historic Places, a great sightseeing bonanza.
Market Square has many specialty shops and an open air market. Right next to Market Square
there is a gathering of specialty shops including the Narcissus.
Beton Place is an immense shopping complex that in its previous life was an enchanting
brick church. About 18 miles northwest of Tallahassee tucked in the woods down a lonely
dirt road is the Nicholson Farmhouse. It includes a tour on a mule wagon ride where one
can dine and shop. Dine at the original house on "wet aged" steaks, reported as the
choicest beef in Florida.
Tallahassee Cuisine
The Bahn Thai offers over 120 items on their menu. The menu is written
in Thai but explained fully in English to all patrons. Andrew's North has an interesting
dish - oak roasted salmon. Greek, Italian and seafood restaurants are scattered throughout
the area. Locals stay with tradition and partake of fish dinners down at "The Bridge."
Tallahassee Nightlife
The Oaks Restaurant serves platters of hushpuppies. Hushpuppies are fried balls of
cornbread that hunters and fishermen tossed to their dogs to quiet them. (To hush the
puppies up.) A heaping platter of hushpuppies also serves the purpose of keeping restless
diners at bay.
The Riverfront/Rock Dock Saloon boast a dance floor for kicking up your heels and you can
choose from country-western or rock and roll. The locals favor Dooley's Downunder for two
shows a night. Dance under The Moon featuring live music with an celebrity performing on
occasion.
Prices normally do not fluctuate during the seasons except from September through November
so make your reservation far in advance during football weekends. There is a high
concentration of lodgings in the downtown vicinity. The Governors Inn being in the heart
of it all. Distinctive rooms named after Florida Governors. You can expect wood burning
fireplaces, nightly turndowns and soft robes.
The Riedel House has a spiral staircase in the fabulous foyer. Each room is detailed with
fine period furniture and antiques. Killearn Country Club and Inn is a golfers dream
