Things to Do in Fort Walton Beach
The beach is by far the biggest attraction in Fort Walton Beach. The snow-white powdery
beaches entice you to the water. The beaches are considered one of the top five shelling
destinations in the world. Giant sandbars and reefs are a shell pickers dream. Diving and
snorkeling are popular sports and many shops rent equipment and have daily dives and
lessons. Rent pontoon boats, canoes, jet-skis, motor boats, sailboats and any other water
sporting equipment. Try parasailing, water-skiing or windsurfing, lessons available. The
white sandy beaches are perfect for making sandcastles, sunbathing or just relaxing. The
emerald green water contrast sharply with the stark whiteness of the beaches. No need to
bring beach baggage because beach rentals are located throughout the area.
A visit to the Gulfarium one of America's original marine life aquariums is informative
and exciting. Fourteen intriguing exhibits catch your eye along with a 600-pound seal and
a two-ounce clown fish.
Fort Walton Beach's Beachfront Parks
Beasley, James Lee Park and the Wayside Park are renovated beachfront parks.
They have quaint gazebos, picnic pavilions, showers, bathrooms and wooden dune walks.
Blackwater State Park and Eglin Reservation are two pristine wilderness preservations
offering tubing, canoeing, hiking and camping. Crystal clear rivers and miles of trails
are scattered through a forest of hickory, maple and pine trees. The magestical sabal palm
is Florida's state tree and can be found in most areas.
Eglin Air Force Base
Free tours at the impressive Eglin Air Force base, the largest base in the world. It is
also home to the biggest environmental test chamber, which produces extremely hot
temperatures and extremely frigid temperatures. The U.S. Air Force Armament Museum is the
only American museum dedicated to Air Force weaponry with interesting displays. The spy
plane "Blackbird" SR-71 is also on display.
Journey through the 10,000 years of ceramic artifacts from four prehistoric
tribes at the Indian Temple Mound and Museum. It is the largest and most impressive
collection of early culture in the United States.
Fort Walton Beach's Various Golf Courses
Golf is supreme at Fort Walton Beach with numerous courses throughout the area.
Challenging courses designed by world-renowned architects where the beauty of Mother
Nature is observed. On a slightly smaller scale the avid younger golfer can practice the
sport at Goofy Golf, Magic Carpet Golf or at the Island Golf Center Fenway Park Batting
Cages/Lost Lagoon Golf. A hidden nostalgic spot is Camp Walton SchoolHouse Museum, which
recalls the days of spelling primers and the old hickory stick. Walk down a primitive path
to the restored post office with rustic wooden mailboxes overflowing with mail, yet to be
delivered. Reservations are required.
Nightlife in Fort Walton Beach
Drink by candlelight, dance to live tunes from the 40's and rock and roll at Timbers
Nitespot where walls come alive with motion picture posters. "Hog's breath is better than
no breath at all." the slogan that tells it all at the Hog's Breath Saloon. Rock and roll
bands play most evenings at this wild and wacky bar. A more casual approach is Fudpuckers
on the Island, live reggae, and rock and roll on the outdoor patios.
For the best shopping excursion try the nearby towns of Seaside or Destin.
