About Daytona Beach
If it had not been for the invention of the wheel, Daytona Beach would only have its
fabulous beaches to boast about. The beaches are known as the "World's Most Famous" and
that is an understatement. Daytona has 23 miles of hard-packed beautiful beaches. The
northern and the southern ends of the beaches afford a little more privacy. Drive your
vehicle right along the beach and park next to the waters' edge. There is a vehicle
access fee between February 1 and November 30. There is no racing on the beach as the
speed limit is 10 m.p.h.
Surfers are drawn to the area of Ponce Inlet. Spring break brings hundreds of college
students to the beaches. The first lighthouse was erected at Mosquito Inlet known as the
most treacherous area in the Southeast. The forty-five foot brick lighthouse was built in
1835 at a cost of $7,494. William Williams became the keeper of the light and waited for
the precious oil to arrive to light the lamps. The lamps remained unlit.
Lighthouses of Daytona Beach
In 1835 a hurricane washed away the keeper's quarters and swept away parts of the
lighthouse foundation. The lighthouse leaned precariously and Williams abandoned the
structure. During the Second Seminole War the glass lanterns were destroyed and fire
ravaged the wooden staircase. In 1836 the lighthouse became one with the sea. Mosquito
Inlet waited 50 years before it became home to another lighthouse.
The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse is the second tallest brick lighthouse in the United
States. It stands 173 feet tall and separates New Smyra Beach from Daytona Beach. Built in
1887 it serves as a historic landmark. In 1982, the Coast Guard reactivated it as a
working lighthouse. Hard work and determination have placed this piece of history on the
National Register of Historic Places. Climb to the top of the lighthouse for a fantastic
view of Daytona Beach. The structure is visible for 16 nautical miles and flashes every 10
seconds. The keeper's cottage has been converted into a museum and is open to the public.
Racing at Daytona Beach
An icon for Daytona Beach is the wheel. The Daytona International Speedway complex opened
in 1959. Car racing forever changed the attitude of Daytona Beach, bringing fame and
fortune to the tropical paradise. Major racing events feature stock cars, sports cars,
motorcycles and go-carts. The mile long grandstand seats over 110,000 spectators and
serves as an automobile test area. To attend the Daytona 500 you must purchase your
tickets about a year in advance.
The Atlantic Ocean borders Daytona Beach, and the Halifax River runs through the center of
the city. A1A runs north and south along the beach providing terrific glimpses of the
water. US 1 runs inland paralleling the western edge of the Halifax River. International
Speedway Boulevard is the main east-west highway.
Rooms are scarce during major races and spring break and the prices escalate. Temperate
climate, wonderful beaches and the roar of engines make Daytona Beach a hot vacation
spot.
