About Deerfield Beach, Florida
The ocean-front town of Deerfield Beach is situated along southeastern Florida in Broward
County. This thriving community provides strong leadership not only in tourism, but also
in everything from agriculture and manufacturing to corporate offices and businesses. In
fact, the only thing one will find missing from the 12.6 square miles of Deerfield Beach
is the noisy atmosphere of many Florida, "Spring Break" towns.
In 1898 Hillsboro Became Deerfield Beach
The Deerfield Beach area was first settled in 1890 and was incorporated
as a city in 1925. Originally called Hillsboro, the area's first inhabitants were mainly
farmers and fishermen. In wasn't until 1898 that the town of Hillsboro changed its name to
Deerfield, for the deer that were once plentiful in the regions west of town. Deerfield
remained primarily an agricultural community until the 1940's when the name was finally
changed to Deerfield Beach.
With only 49,193 year-round residents, Deerfield Beach ranks as one of the smaller towns
along Florida's southeast "Gold Coast." While there is a strong retirement component in
the town's inhabitants, the makeup of the city's population is steadily changing. For
example, the average age of a Deerfield resident, 40.2 years in 1984, has decreased to
37.7 years in 1990. With almost 53,000 people expected to call Deerfield
Beach their permanent home by the year 2000, there is a growth trend in overall population
size as well. Those who do call Deerfield Beach their home are rewarded with high median
household incomes, $37,936, and low per capita tax rates.
Deerfield Beach Business Activity
Located just 16 miles to the north of Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach is an ideal
location for every business need. Major corporate distribution centers in the area include
JM Family Enterprises, Inc., Publix Corporation, Double Eagle Distributing, Inc. and
United Parcel Service. Manufacturing also plays an important role in Deerfield's business
economy. For instance, MWI Corporation, an international leader in pump manufacturing, is
located here. Numerous office business parks also add to the professional luster of
Deerfield Beach.
With a year-round average temperature of 77 degrees, beautifully wide beaches, and a
professional business climate, it is clear why Deerfield Beach is one of the top locations
in southeast Florida.
