About St. Augustine, Florida
Simon says take one giant leap forward to your fantasy vacation. Simon says take one tiny
step backwards to a bygone era. St. Augustine, Florida is a special place where the past
melds with the future and the past becomes reality. Enter where the gates of the city were
closed to all at dusk and the security system was the masonry fort Castilo
De San Marcos, built by the Spanish between 1672 - 1695.
St. Johns County is quietly tucked behind the fragile east coast barrier islands of
Florida. It is perched on the intracoastal waterway and due east of Molasses Junction.
St. Augustine is America's Oldest Permanently Settled European City
St. Augustine is America's oldest permanently settled European city. The line between old
and new are hard to define. You can look indefinitely for skyscrapers and you will not
find one. You can compare Flagler College to the new bank built last year and the
difference will be non-existent. St. Augustine is where the new is old and the old is
steeped in history.
St. Augustine's Multicutural Influences
St. Augustine was a thriving town before most of the pilgrims and Virginia Dare were born.
Don Juan Ponce de Leon christened this land, the "Feast of Flowers." Walk down
the streets and experience the Spanish, French, English and Native American influences
that still occupy the area. Fort Morse was the nation's first Black settlement. On June 9,
1964 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood at the site and stated he would be active at a
sit-in the next day. The historical roots of many are deeply imbedded in this unique city.
