About Sanibel Island
Striking sunsets, spectacular shelling, and looming lighthouses. These are quite possibly
the first images one has of Southern Florida's Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Yet there are
so many unexpected pleasures to find here. Everything from nature hiking to shopping to
just plain relaxing can be found on Sanibel and the twenty miles of pristine, white, sandy
beaches which comprise its shore. On these "Seashell Islands," life is lush and
taken at an easy, relaxed pace.
Residents of Sanibel Island
In the winter, Sanibel and Captiva islands' population booms to 22,000.
However, during the remainder of the year, around 6,000 residents call either Sanibel or
Captiva their permanent home. Most Sanibel inhabitants reside in close-knit condominium
neighborhoods. Architecture, ranging from stilt homes to stucco housing, typically centers
on boating, golfing, or children.
Activities of Sanibel Island
A feeling of artistic and historical depth permeates the air. There are a total of 22 fine
art galleries and three theaters, as well as the annual Sanibel Music Festival. Even the
gift shops boast more than merely merchandise. The Sanibel Seashell Industry, for example,
offers the largest display of shells of the island--over 10,000 species.
You'll become literally "shell-shocked" as you walk down aisles viewing marine
animals, minerals and fossils, crafts, and even shell lamps. For the active-minded
shopper, Sanibel is an island oasis. There are over thirty Swim and Surf shops.
Furthermore, there are no less than seven locations to service and sell bicycles and
mopeds, favorite Sanibel transportation. Also numerous on the island are beauty and hair
salons, bookstores, jewelers, and interior/furniture shops.
Business Activities of Sanibel Island
Sanibel has a thriving business community as well. Many financial services, including
Nationsbank and Merrill Lynch, have offices here. In addition, Internet companies, full
insurance services, and advertising agencies are all within easy reach to meet your
commercial needs. For entertaining clients and professional liaisons, business and
pleasure do mix on the area's two golf courses. And as for business commuting on Sanibel
Island, both taxi and limousine service are available.
