About Amelia Island
What is the distance between the eyes and the soul? A barrier island with 13 miles of
beautiful beach front located just off the northeastern tip of Florida. Amelia Island is
surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway and Nassau Sound. Spanish
settlers migrated to the island around 1566, which was originally inhabited by the
Timucuan Indians. Amelia Island is just 35 minutes from downtown Jacksonville.
Many Flags of Amelia Island
Several different flags have laid claim to the small island, they include
French, Spanish, English, Mexican and the Confederate during the Civil War. Fernandina
Beach located in the northern section of the island once a pirate's haven, it is now a
productive shrimping and fishing center.
Historical Lodging on Amelia Island
History enthusiast flock to Fort Clinch State Park and explore the remains of the pre
Civil War Fort and its wonderful nature trails. Amelia Island fascinating past comes alive
in present day forms. The unique character of the island can be seen in the charming Bed
and Breakfast lodgings. The Bailey House is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. Effingham W. Bailey ordered his house plans by mail. The Queen Ann
style is evident in the stain glass windows, pocket doors, satin pine floors and intricate
fireplaces. Bailey House is one of the most photographed Victorian homes in the South. All
rooms are period decorated with fabulous antiques, working fireplaces and large turreted
sitting areas. Elegant porches wrap around the house and it is all held together by a
charming white picket fence.
The Fairbanks House is a gorgeous Italianate Villa where personalized attention is evident
in every aspect of operation. The lodging offers honeymoon specials and romantic getaways
with the choice of a suite, or cottage room. Champagne, gourmet breakfast, bicycles,
private porches, picnic baskets and an array of activities await you at this elegant
villa. Each room is filled with oriental rugs, period furniture, fireplaces and
intricately carved moldings. The Fairbanks House is listed on the National Register of
Historical Places and is located in the center of the Historic District.
The Elizabeth Pointe Lodge resembles a Nantucket shingle style house filled
with a maritime theme. Each room has its own personality and the house is filled with
books, fresh flowers, and maritime photos. Sip lemonade on the massive porches complete
with rockers, newspapers and abundant sunshine. Amelia Island offers an array of private
homes, condominiums, resorts, inns and campgrounds.
Family Activities on Amelia Island
The 50 block section of the downtown area is a kaleidoscope of gorgeous Victorian and
Queen Anne homes listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The main beach
located in Fernandina is the center of activity that includes free parking for picnics,
swimming, playgrounds and a host of food concessions. This area is extremely
popular for family outings. The bustling downtown area has numerous vintage shops and
charming boutiques. The Palace Saloon claims to be Florida's oldest watering hole. Live
music bounces off the pressed tin ceilings and the mahogany bar once played host to the
Carnegies and the duPonts.
Fort Clinch State Park is secluded and sports white sandy beaches and a fantastic fishing
pier. There are 62 campsites available at this wonderful park. The island is surrounded by
water, rolling sand dunes and lush vegetation.
